Berlin-Kreuzberg: Check Point Charlie was the name of one of the several Berlin gateways between East and West Germany during the Cold War years. Manned by state police, the checkpoint became emblematic of the stand-off between the world super powers. Numerous attempts at escape were made from the eastern side to the western one. After the fall of the Berlin wall, the checkpoint became superfluous and was only recently established as a museum. Stirring considerable controversy, the museum also re-erected a portion of the wall in order to contextualize the checkpoint. The guard towers, which were removed after reunification, have also been replicated.
