Shanksville, Pennsylvania: United Flight 93 was the only one of the hijacked September 11th planes not to have reached its intended target. It is widely held that the hijackers were prevented from their goal though the collective efforts of the passengers of this flight, who rallied together to divert the plane. It crashed in an open field in Somerset County, Pennsylvania, taking the lives of all aboard. The passengers have since been recognized as national heroes and a memorial is planned in the location of the crash. It will feature a crescent shaped maple grove curving around the location where the plane went down. As the area is also the grave site of the victims, it will be open only to family and friends. However, the surrounding gardens will be open to tourists. The project is supported by the Flight 93 Memorial Foundation and the National Park Service. A temporary memorial is currently in place, a forty foot long fence, one foot to represent each passenger killed, at which visitors can leave flowers and letters.
