Columbine High School, Littleton, Colorado: On April 20th, 1999, two students, Dylan Klebold and Eric Harris, opened fire on their classmates and teachers at Columbine High School. Their violent rampage through the school led to the deaths of 12 students and a teacher and wounded countless others. They then took their own lives. In honor of those killed, the Colombine community has developed two separate memorial sites. The Memorial Library was built out of the wreckage of the massacre, primarily through the efforts of the victim’s families and through generous public support. Because it is located on school grounds, the library itself is not open to the public. A public monument is planned aside the library in Clement Park, with the ground-breaking ceremony scheduled to take place in the summer of 2006. Once completed, the Columbine Memorial will feature two layers or rings, one which memorializes the victims of the tragedy. The second focuses on the experience of the larger Columbine community in the aftermath of the shooting.
