Jasenovac, Croatia: Jasenovac was a concentration and extermination camp run by Croatia’s Ustasha government during World War II. Strongly influenced by Nazi ideology, the government constructed Jasenovac with the primary goal of exterminating the Serbian population. The camp was in operation from 1941-1945 and during this time hundreds of thousands lost their lives, most through the sadistic cruelty of guards. Immediately before the camps liberation, Ustasha military burned the facility to the ground. The area was designated as a memorial and museum in 1968, and the main memorial, Flower, was unveiled on the grounds to much acclaim. Though none of the camp buildings have been reconstructed, the museum displays numerous material objects that belonged to prisoners.
