Near Hamburg, Germany: Established in 1940, Neuengamme was a forced labor camp located near the German city of Hamburg. Hundreds of thousands of people, including substantial numbers of women, labored under the watchful eye of the SS. After the war, the camp was used to detain former Nazi officials and guards, and Allied forces expanded the prison blocks to accommodate POW’s. In 1953, under the direction of former prisoners, a memorial was established on the site, in the garden area where many of the victim’s ashes were spread by the Nazis. Since that time, the buildings at Neuengamme have been designated as historical landmarks, and a memorial wall has been erected. Numerous smaller monuments stand at different camp locations.
