Nyanza, Rwanda: During the Rwandan genocide of 1994, in which ethnic Hutus massacred nearly one million Tutsis, a school building in the town of Nyanza was used by the United Nations Peacekeeping forces to house and protect local Tusti citizens. After the withdrawal of the United Nations troops, the refugees were slaughtered by Hutu soldiers, their bodies left on the side of the road. The mass grave has been maintained as a memorial, and simple wooden crosses indicate the site where 2,000 victims are buried.
