Krakow, Poland: Established as a forced labor camp in 1941, Plazkow was also used to detain Nazi prisoners en route to death camps. Many of the Jews residing in the Krakow ghetto were imprisoned in Plazkow. The camp was particularly notable because a number of women SS guards were stationed here, infamous for their sadistic cruelty towards prisoners. There are several mass graves on the site. The Nazis liquidated the camp in 1944, destroying buildings and forcing prisoners to begin a death march towards Auschwitz. Today, nothing remains at the site except a small plaque in a grass field.
