Berlin, Germany: Operating from 1936-1945, Sachsenhausen was home to approximately 200,000 people, almost half of whom died inside the camp. After passing through the gates of the prison, which bore the infamous “Work will set you free” motto of the Nazis, many of the prisoners were forced to labor in a counterfeit factory, manufacturing fake British and American money. The camp, located close to the center of Nazi controlled territory, was also a used to train thousands of SS guards, who were later deployed to the extermination camps. Many of the buildings have been reconstructed and several memorial sites, located at the site of mass graves, are open to visitors.
