Alkoven, Austria: Hartheim Castle, located in Austria, was used by the Nazis to perform medical experimentation and the euthanasia of disabled persons during World War II. Today, one portion of the castle hosts an exhibition which explores attitudes towards the handicapped more generally. In 1969, a committee worked to restore the areas used as gas and execution chambers and these areas can now be viewed, but not entered, by visitors. A reflection and prayer room stands aside a memorial garden, which is believed to hold the ashes of thousands of victims.
