Sztutowo, Poland: Constructed in 1939, Stutthof was one of the first Nazi concentration camps and was located in the small Polish town of Sztutowo. Almost one hundred thousand people died there during the six years that the camp was operating, many from overwork, hunger and execution. In the later years of the war, several large crematoriums were constructed to speed up the murder of prisoners. In 1945, thousands were forcibly evacuated from the camp, and marched to the Baltic Sea, where they were then lined up and executed. Founded in 1962, the National Stutthof Museum preserves the site and features extensive exhibits, both archival and artistic. Many of the artistic displays are statues which represent the suffering of the prisoners in the gas chambers or at the gallows.
