New Delhi, India: The New Delhi residence of Mahatma Gandhi, the Birla House was also the site of his assassination in January of 1948. While leaving his house to attend a prayer meeting, he was shot dead in the park across the street. Today, his home is a popular tourist destination. The park itself has been dedicated as a memorial site in his honor and cement markers trace the strides of his last walk. Tourists are encouraged to follow in his footsteps in respectful silence. The inside of his house is devoted to Indian history, with a special focus on Gandhi’s life and legacy. A small glass case mounted on a hallway wall contains the sparse material remains of the renowned ascetic.
