Drenthe, Netherlands: Originally constructed as a refuge for those fleeing the Nazis, Westerbork was eventually turned into a concentration camp when Nazi forces invaded the Netherlands. Anne Frank and her family were detained at Westerbrok for a short time, before being sent to Auschwitz. Most of the camp buildings were destroyed in the 1970s, but a small memorial and museum stands at one end of the grounds. In recent years several of the barracks and guard towers have been restored and a memorial was constructed at the location of the former roll call. One small red brick, marked with a Star of David, represents each person imprisoned at Westerbrok.
